Cuddly Scrap Blanket

I had such a great time reading all the comments from last post.  You all are such wonderfully creative people and I hope that you all get a chance to have your own creative retreats soon!

I've been hard at work finishing my scrap blanket and am I ever happy with it!  There is something so satisfying about knitting something so substantial and using up a large bag of yarn scraps that was taking up space.

I'm aware that it desperately needs a good blocking to be the right shape, but I just don't have the space in my dorm room to do so right now.

Once I finished binding off I was very surprised to see how huge it had turned out considering how compact it had been on the circular needles.  I took this as a chance to practice my very basic crochet skills and try and get more comfortable with working with a hook, it worked out pretty well.

I also really enjoyed working with so many types of yarn, I've definitely rediscovered some favorites.  For example, I'm dying to work with Knit Picks Simply Cotton again, it is heavenly!

Some of you asked about the pattern, I totally improvised this pattern by just starting with 4 stitches and knitting in a round, increasing evenly by four stitches each round.  Super easy and fun!

Also some people have been asking about the quilt that was featured in the background of last post, it was a scrap quilt made by my great-grandmother, I treasure it immensely.

All through this project I envisioned how wonderful it will be to cuddle under this blanket in my new apartment this winter!

I also wanted to take some time to thank all of my wonderful blogging friends for cheering me on these last few months.  Writing a thesis and working towards a degree has not been easy and your support has been amazing!  Thank you so much!

  1. WOW, it looks wonderful. You had a fair amount of some of those colors. Did you necessarily make sure each row was the same color or did you just change on the fly...when you ran out of the yarn? I can see why you enjoyed it so much.

    1. At the beginning I tried to keep the stripes consistant, then when I ran out of some of the yarn I got a little more random with it. I agree though, I had a lot left over for some of the yarns, I wish that I had saved a couple for small projects.

  2. Oh my goodness that is absolutely amazing!!! Did you mix fibers or was it a compilation of all types of scrap fibers? I'm in love with it! Also finding time to knit while earning a degree is super difficult I feel your pain. But the knitting is a necessary stress reliever. Congratulations you deserve it! Science degrees are not just handed out :)

    1. I've got everything in there: cotton, alpaca, many different kinds of wool. Maybe not the most practical project ever, but I love it! Glad to have another sciencey person to identify with : )

  4. The blanket came out nicely! I love the way each color strip twirls around, makes it much more sophisticated than just simple increases. Consider the size, you finished it rather quickly!

  9. Oh YAY - this blanket has turned out even better than I expected. I adore it and think it was a brilliant idea of yours to use up all your scraps for it. I never thought it would be that big either when you shared its progess on the needles.
    Totally fantastic!

  17. I"m impressed with how big it came out too! I always get a bit nervous when working on a large project on circulars. It's always a bit of a surprise when you bind off.

  22. I think it's lovely and will make a very nice chilly weather blanket. I have the same problem with a scarf of mine. I wanted to block it on the bed but it's longer than my bed! :O I really need to purchase some blocking wires to make it easier.

  26. So gorgeous! What a great idea. It kind of looks like an Op-Art blanket (I think that one was a Knitty pattern)
Btw, you could always steamblock (steam with an iron). I'm too lazy to wetblock most of the time, so that's my go-to method
