Olive Handspun

DSC_0045

Look!  New handspun!  It has been a little while since I have finished a skein that I really feel proud of, but here is a pretty example.

  • Spun: June 2013
  • Roving: merino/silk blend (Webs)
  • Colors: Shiny olive green with specks of red
  • Spindle: Schacht 3” Hi-Lo drop spindle (2.2 oz.)
  • 3 ply, ~230 yards, ? Ounces, fingering weight

I had some of this fiber left over from my first spin-to-knit project, not enough to do much, but definitely worth spinning.  This is such a nice fiber to spin, it is slick and easy to coax into thin strands.  It is also very soft because of how fine the merino is and the silk content.

You can also see one of my hairs sticking out in this photo, that frequently happens when I get distracted while spinning.  There is rarely a day when my long hair doesn't get in the way, I dread the inevitable day when one makes it into a lab experiment or a liver organoid starts developing hair follicles.

  3. My heart stopped a little! That color is so beautiful! You are a pro spinner. Look at how even the yarn is! I always knit hair into everything and lose it all over the place, so I what you mean. :P

  5. That's lovely. I know the feeling about finishing something you are proud of, I have only finished 2 things this year and the year is half over. Must move those needles faster :)

  8. Wow! I'm so impressed! Spinning is a rabbithole that I've been able to easily avoid being sucked into ... for now! I know what you mean about your hair, mine is long too and ends up in just about every project. I've long joked that if they ever need a dna sample, they just need to confiscate one of my hand knits!

  9. This is so beautiful! I haven't spun in the last few weeks, but I love to do it, it relaces me SO much ... It's like having a Golden Ticket to the flow. :)

Congratulations on this beautiful yarn! But may I ask - how do you determine the length of it? My guy has shown me how to do it, but it seems incredibly complicated ...

  10. The yarn is beautiful, Ivy! I'm really impressed that it looks so... perfect. Smooth, thin and consistent tension. You make me wanna get my spinning wheel moving right now. Too bad it's almost midnight and I have to get up early...
May I ask how long it took you until you spun your first 'proper' (as in usable...) skein? I'm still reluctant to buy more expensive fibers because I'm never quite happy with my handspun :(

  14. Oh wow, how thin and lovely that is! I aspire to spin as smoothly and evenly as you do.

  16. I'm in love with that beautiful color! What will you make with it?

  17. NICE! Love the color! I'm on the brink of trying to three ply. Now that I have sort of managed a fairly nice two ply. Plying is a little intimidating for me though. Looks like you've conquered it quite nicely though.

  18. Gorgeous!!! What a stunning yarn! I keep planning to knit your handspun up, but then I just can't decide what it wants to be!

  19. Beautiful! Love the colour.
My hair seems to be in every thing I knit...
But I've heard that in the old days when wives and girlfriends knitted felted mittens for their husbands and boyfriends who went to sea fishing, they allways knitted in some of their hair for good luck and love ;)
So I guess it means all my knitting is packed full of love then :)
