Knitting Disappointments

I had planned to present a new project to you all tonight; however, creativity was not kind to me today.  I know that a lot of my readers have blogs of their own, which I follow fairly regularly, and I have been  blown away by some of the projects that have been finished over the course of this week.  Seriously, you all are incredibly talented!  If I have not had a chance to see your work yet, well, I'll go out on a limb and say that it's pretty great.

I've been itching to share my latest project with you, a pair of gloves from an old American Red Cross pattern from an amazing collection of vintage patterns designed for soldiers fighting in World War I and World War II.  My partner of seven years (I frequently call him Mr. Engineer) has been begging me for a new pair of knitted gloves, and because he is a history buff (and plays his fair share of Call of Duty type games) I thought this pattern would be ideal.

I found the perfect yarn for the project, and then cast on and powered through.  It was working out great for a while, the first glove fit perfectly and he loved how it came out.  I was so excited to finish them at that point that the project went really quickly...until I ran out of yarn.  This is a problem I've never experienced before, and frankly I didn't see it coming.  I think the gauge was a little tight and that ate up more yarn than I expected.  The most painful part is that it ran out halfway through the pinky and right before finishing the thumb.

I was on the home stretch (picture taken prior to tragic event)!

The worst part is that I'm getting ready to leave town for a week and the local yarn store I bought the yarn from is an hour in the other direction.  So, I'm not entirely sure when Mr. Engineer will receive his finished gloves.

I'm annoyed by this knitting experience, but sometimes crap happens!  I apologize for the lack of project news too.  Next week will likely bring more successes and more positive posts (in particular, I'm very excited to share an amazing knitting book I'm obsessed with right now).  Until then!

  1. Ahhhhh I'm sorry! Whats the yarn? Maybe Wildflower has it? Anyways I hope you can power through this and make something amazing! And I can't wait to find out what book you're in love with! I need to buy more knitting books- maybe instead of yarn this year I'll just buy books!

  2. Well love just remember it is not always about finishing projects, sometimes it is about enjoying the process. You will finish these gloves and they will be perfection. We will all ooohh and ahhh, and try to help you forget about the tragedy. :)

    1. That is so sweet of you to say! I'm just too used to my hard work leading to a perfect result. But you are so right, I shouldn't forget the enjoyment I got out of the actual knitting. Thanks for the encouragement!

  3. you could finish the pinky with whatever yarn you have laying around, then take it back when you get another ball of what you were using? Kind of unconventional, but would lead to finished gloves while you're away. hehe I don't think you're soldier will mind, as long as they're warm!

    1. That is a really clever idea, I seriously hadn't thought of doing that at all. I have some superwash Cascade 220 left over from another project that would work perfectly!

  5. Aww, that is so annoying. On the other hand, the glove that is finished looks amazing! While that has never happened to me before, I have a sweater that my mom made for me when I was little while she was on bed rest with my sister. she got to the second sleeve and realised that she was going to run out of yarn. She couldn't get up, and she knew my dad would be clueless, so for the longest time I had a bright red sweater with two random stripes of navy on one sleeve. Kind of bizarre, but still cute.

    1. That actually sounds super cute! I'm often tempted to throw in a random stripe onto hats and gloves, why not a sweater? That is an adorable story, thanks for sharing : )

  7. That really is the worst, but I agree with another commenter, they will eventually get done and will be even more loved and appreciated when he finally gets them :) The first one came out beautifully! What is it about guys that the only thing they ever ask for is gloves?! ;)

  8. Oh my goodness, I've been there, though it usually happens when I'm making socks. There are at least three pairs that I've made with a totally different colored toe. Luckily the recipients didn't mind!
