I finished my Azzu's Shawl many days ago but hesitated in writing about it because I cannot seem to get it to behave...
I even blocked it in the world's best blocking sink ever (when I first saw my apartment, this was the thing I was most excited about).
The pattern was Azzu's Shawl by Emma Fassio, it was an simple, easy pattern that was perfect for mindless knitting. It did get a little boring, but rows of yarn overs helped break up the bordom. Also, when looking at the pattern page, mine turned out a little smaller than others even though I made gauge (I think..) and did the proper number of repeats.
The yarn was Regia Hand-dye Effect, you all probably already know how I feel about this yarn. But I completed my goal, to complete a project with it, so I'm ready to move on to bigger and better things.
What cast off did you use? If you really want to bother and you have extra yarn you could try to knit a row of garter stitch before binding off with JSSBO http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall09/FEATjssbo.php. It should loosen up the edge which might be part of the curling problem (in addition to the stockinette).
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the problem is with the pattern and not your knitting. You might try Alicia's suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI love the yarn that you used - the colors are wonderful.
Lovely piece from some unloved yarn. I would not have had the patience to block twice! Such a Ahmed about he curling.
ReplyDeleteAnd great sink!! :D
Love the color! I wish that it would lay flat, but knitting likes to do whatever it wants sometimes. And yes, that is the world's best blocking sink. So jealous right now!
ReplyDeleteI love your sink! I can see why you wanted THAT apartment! The shawl is lovely, and it looks like a great project for relaxing the mind :-)
ReplyDeleteHmm... I'm not sure that I have any quality input. I'm inclined to go with with what seems the easiest option - let it be! Just accept that this one has a very strong will and embrace it's individuality!! Then toss it in the corner of the wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteI am actually fearful that my Eleanor wrap is going to have this same problem. It's even hard to work on because it's so curly!
As for your sink - clearly you were destine to have that apartment - how very cool!
Have a great weekend!
that shawl looks really beautiful, though! it looks like just the pattern i should pick for my first.
ReplyDeleteI really really love your sink! I think it's called farm trough style, couple of my friends had it put in when they remodeled their kitchens, but I have never seen it in an apartment. The shawl is nice too :-) The yarn turned out beautifully even tho it may not be the best to work with.
ReplyDeleteI really like it, its a shame it seems to bunch, but actually its a great way to wear it! GREAT sink!!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is one unique sink! I love the shawl! Everyone should have at least one unruly something or another in their wardrobe...don't ya think?! :-)
ReplyDeleteI think that yarn was destined to drive you nuts. The colors are quite lovely, though.
ReplyDeleteThats a great sink. I think your shawl is lovely, but I'm gratified to see that yours curls too. I made a Travelling Woman, I blocked it, it curled. I bought blocking wires and pins, it curled. I washed it, twice, and blocked it, still curls. So I have accepted that I know it looks pretty it was just the wrong yarn for the job.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen an apartment sink like that - a knitter's dream! As for your misbehaving shawl, maybe you need to let it behave that way and just enjoy its little hugs s it curl round your neck? ; )
ReplyDeleteI like the curls, I don't think they detract from the overall effect of the shawl although I guess it's frustrating that they weren't "supposed" to be there. The colours are gorgeous though :-)
ReplyDeleteI hate when things won't behave! It is gorgeous though, and that sink is wonderful :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a completely awesome sink! And I love the colors of your shawl.
ReplyDeleteSorry you are having a hard time with it. The fabric is beautiful and I really like the colors!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you can't stop the curling :O(. How weird blocking doesn't help.
ReplyDeleteThe colors are terrific tho and what a nice hug for your neck this Fall and Winter.
Even with it curling up it turned out gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThat shawl is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteThe shawl is gorgeous! I don't think the curling matters at all.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lovely sink! Great for blocking. The shawl is lovely even though it's not behaving. I think the colors are beautiful and really shine through in this piece.
ReplyDeleteHow have you been? I know grad school is stressful but I know you can do it.
That sink is totally awesome! I think the shawl is gorgeous. I have yet to knit a shawl that doesn't scrunch up into a wrinkly ball the second I wind it around my neck. :)
ReplyDeleteHow nice! The shawl of course... although the sink ;-)
ReplyDeleteyou might have to "hard" block it by using an iron and essentially "melt" the acrylic fibers in it because there aren't enough hydrogen bonds to realign and help it keep it's shape like natural fibers, but you knew this ;] regardless its very pretty and I love the pattern
ReplyDeletebtw sorry for falling behind on commenting on your blog and talking to you about the cowl, my allergies have been terrible and I've barely gotten anything done/ worked on like I should :/
