Some days...

Some days I wish I had an extra set of arms so that I could knit while working in lab or brushing my teeth, things like that.  Despite my multitasking limitations I've still been making progress on some projects.

I'm really enjoying Winifred, on a whim I've decided to start the sleeves before finishing the rest of the body.  I don't complain when I'm actually in a mood to knit sleeves.  I don't say this often, but I can definitely imagine myself knitting another (perhaps in green?).

Now I have a question for you all: how do you clean a sweater that has some advanced pilling?

As you can hopefully see, this merino/silk blend is beginning to pill like crazy!  I really want to clean this sweater but I'm afraid of completely ruining it!  As one of my favorites, this would be a huge loss to me.  Any suggestions?

Now I must delve back in the the world of G-coupled receptors, not all of us can afford to laze around like a certain someone I know:

I really enjoyed reading comments from last post on kitchen appliances!  I definitely need a blender and Marie suggested an attachment for my Kitchen-Aid mixer that can work as a food processor to a certain extent.

Also, Lisa has heard me go on and on about this, but if you are looking for a good movie, you must go see Silver Linings Playbook.  I'm usually very picky when it comes to movies and dislike most fluffy romantic movies, but I would go so far as to say that this was the best film of 2012.  It was surprisingly deep and meaningful for what I lovingly labeled a "pseudo-indie" film and the emotion (excellent casting!) and subject really connected for me.

  2. 2012 or 2013? :3

Winifred is looking goooood! Is the colour called pumpkin? XD

I have a little machine I bought at a gift shop taht shaves the pilling off my clothes. I think it's called a lint machine. I've not tried it on any hand knits but I imagine it would do the job.

  3. So many things to comment on! Your cat is gorgeous, your sweater is looking lovely(and ohhh green, yum!) and I have heard that movie is awesome, will have to check it out! I haven't bought one yet, but there are some really heavy duty electric de-pillars available, you can even plug them in, I actually think some of the online yarn stores sell them? I have been known to cheat and use a hand razor though!

  4. LOVED That movie :) And the kitty! Oh and that sweater looks so great on you when you wore it that day we hung out. I wish I could help with the pilling....
I love where Winifred is going also, I cannot wait to see you wearing it. Hopefully I can get back into my sweater soon as well then we can wear our sweaters together :)

  5. Winifred is a yummy color!

I can't help you on the pill removal, but if you find something that works please share it with us.

  6. have you tried a sweater stone? I feel like there would be less of a chance of Very Bad Things with a stone versus something that plugged in.

Love the sweater, love the cat!

  7. I have a lint remover, which only works kind of sort of well, and a pumice stone (Knit Picks!), which is supposed to be the End of Pills! I haven't used it yet, but anyone I know who has says it works wonders.

  8. After trying many things, I can confidently say that a sweater stone is the best way I've found to clean up a pilled sweater. You do have to do it outside since the stone gives off some granules, but it works really well. My Mum, who is notoriously picky about things, even asked me to get her one after she tried mine.

And oddly enough, my brother recommended that movie to me. I think I may have to go see it now that you are recommending it.

  9. I have always just used a little battery operated lint remover but I really must check out the sweater stone everyone's talking about. Love that spoiled kitty of yours.....she looks very content there on her perch. And the Winifred is gorgeous. Love that cable down the front!

  10. I have one of those de-fuzzers, but you really need someone to do it for you when you are wearing it. Love your Winifred, your cat is very cute, looks just like my daughter's cat Penny

  12. As already suggested, get a pill remover. I don't like sweater stones because I think that they snag the fabric more than anything, but I do love my little battery-operated pill shaver! It gets fabric looking brand new again.

  13. Your sweater is beautiful! I can't imagine being in the mood to knit sleeves:) Of course that is where I am with my sweater and I am avoiding it like the plague.
I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Battery-Operated-Fabric-Shaver/dp/B0034BV6KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359037624&sr=8-1&keywords=sweater+shaver though an older model. It works pretty well. Shave carefully though I nearly killed a sweater with overzealous shaving.

  14. My friend and I were recently jesting how marvelous it would be to have multiple sets of arms like the Hindi goddess Kali. But, we wondered, would we be able to appropriately divide our attention and work on multiple patterns at the same time.... this remains inconclusive.

I agree with above comments regarding the little battery operated shaver. Just take care to no try and do the whole sweater in one go. I totally burned up the motor trying to. I also like the little handheld pill shaver/razors. They're great as long as their aren't aged and dull. I dislike the stone. It snags and leaves debris in its wake.

  16. You picked such a wonderful color for your Winifred. I wish I had advice about how to take care of pilling but it looks like other commenters have that covered!

  17. Love everything about your fall-hued sweater. GO! With your sleeves. Whatever makes you happy while knitting. Mix it up!!!! :-)

Kitty is lovely, should I ever acquire a kitty, I'll follow you lead.

  18. I don't know about the sweater stone but my mom had a battery powered sweater shaver thing that just spun in a circle and would nip the pills. Worrked great. Don't know where she got it though. I love the color of your Windifre. Beautiful.

  19. Winifred looks awesome so far! I use a regular (non-electric) razor to shave off pills. It's slow and tedious, but it works pretty well. Fuzz gets everywhere, though!

  20. You may not want advice from me. I have a cashmere blend sweater that is doing that and I just keep wearing it. I'm pretty sure I should be ashamed, but I'm too scared I'll ruin it.

  21. This is going to be such a gorgeous sweater! I love that you're knitting the sleeves before finishing the body-- you'll barely have anything left to do after the sleeves are finished! Woohoo! As for removing pills, I have a little device called a d-fuzz it. It's just a little comb-shaped piece of plastic with a sandpaper-y surface on one edge. I have cashmere cardigans that I've used it on for years, and they're holding up really well. Hope that helps!

  22. Don't LYSes sell those little depilling combs or winding mechanisms? I know I certainly need one. Winifred is terrific!

  23. I was about to recommend the sweater stone and had no idea it wasn't popular! I've never even heard of the electronic pill removers and will have to check them out (tho, I like my sweater stone just fine).

BUT, I must know where you got that cat scratcher/tunnel thing that cute cat is laying on. Is that at PetSmart or something? My cats need it.

  24. I love how your Winifred looks its amazing. Sometimes I wish I could be a cat, because they have it so easy, don't they?

  25. Your Winifred is looking fantastic! I wish I had some good advice about your pilling sweater, but I'm sadly in the same boat with one of my own.

Your kitty looks as lazy as mine, and oh so beautiful! It must be totally amazing to be a cat. :)

  26. I just pull the pills off and wash as usual. Over time the sweater gets thinner, but that just means it's time to make a new one, or two or three.

  27. That sweater looks gorgeous, and when you figure out the best way you should post it. I have that problem on some of my store bought sweaters even!
