Spinning Away!

I would love to spend some time writing a long, involved post tonight and I love you all.  However, I'm going to have to leave you with a hastily shot phone picture and an abbreviated post.

I'm having one of those special days where I get a burst of crafting momentum that suddenly comes out of nowhere!  Now I am determined to ply this alpaca handspun I've been working on for a while.

I'm sure many of you know exactly what I mean when I say that when the urge to ply happens, do it!  Plying on a drop spindle is very slow and annoying (this is the reason why I want to have a wheel), so when I feel up to plying I take advantage of it.

Besides, I feel so content and happy after a few hours of happy crafting.  All of the stress over homework, thesis, and life in general sort of drift away for a while.  Then when the burst of craftiness is over, I am so much more productive in the rest of my work because I'm so much more relaxed!

Anyways, you will likely find me spindling away for the rest of the day until this yarn is plied.  Then hopefully I'll have a finished project to share!

Also, I wanted some advice.  Usually when I'm working on some handspun I get so many great project ideas for it once I'm done.  This time around I'm completely blank, any ideas of what this 100% alpaca handspun should be?

  1. Gloves, mittens, hat, or if you have enough and depending on weight, shawl, shrug, cardigan, socks (but prob just for lounging!) The possibilities are endless because Alpaca is amazing!
Also, I know how you feel, I worked on my sweater for SEVEN hours yesterday (all I have left to do is one more band around the collar!) because I had a burst of knitting motivation. And then today I had a good day of homework because I got the knitting out of my system. I'm still being school lazy though :(
That yarn looks fabulous btw, I wish I could spin as even as you.

  2. I've never had the patience to really spin. I can't believe how much you have! Can't wait to see what you make of it. :)

  3. I understand how you feel about the plying. I learned to spin on a drop spindle, used it for all of about 3 months before I bought a wheel. It was just too slow! I bought an Ashford Kiwi because it was affordable, then I bought a high-speed whirl attatchment so I could spin lace on it. It's still the only wheel I've ever owned (I've had it about six years now) and I'm very happy with it!

Great job on your alpaca! I'd say a warm pair of fingerless mitts would be great in it.

  4. I agree ... anytime that we are inspired to craft, we should do our best to let the moment take over. Your alpaca is looking lovely. I vote for a cozy pair of mitts!

  5. Beautiful yarn, it looks so soft. My first thought was fingerless gloves. Or maybe a shawl?

  6. Ooooh!! Loving the alpaca yarn, and major kudos to you for plying on a spindle. I did that (very badly!) two or three times, then quickly bought a wheel. :)

Your gorgeous yarn would make any project shine, but I think it would be especially lovely as a light, lacy shawlette. The Bison Shawlette from 'Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders' keeps popping into my head.
