Age of Brass and Steam Shawl

Here's another finished project that has been hanging out waiting to be photographed and documented for several weeks now.

The Age of Brass and Steam Shawl was a quick knit when I needed something simple and relaxing to work on around final exam period.

The pattern is The Age of Brass and Steam Kerchief by Orange Flower.  It was exactly what I needed at the time, not complicated and soothing.  Now you can tell that I haven't gotten around to blocking this, one of these days I'll get my act together and have a blocking party.

I dyed the yarn myself sometime last year.  From what I can remember, it is 100% superwash merino dyed using Jacquard.  I'm glad I had just enough for a small shawl!  Too bad it is too warm to get any use out of it for a while.

What do you find yourself knitting/crocheting as a soothing project?

  3. SUCH a beautiful shade of blue! I love the whole project.

I always fall back on dishcloths for soothing knitting- fast, easy, I always have all needed materials ready at hand, and they are excellent gifts to have prepared- or I am happy to stick them in my drawer!

  4. When I need something mindless or to use as a break from my regular knitting, I turn to crochet. There is just something soothing about having only 1 stitch at a time, only 1 hook, and the ease and speed of crochet. I can whip out FOs much faster than with knitting and it's a great way to mix things up a bit if I'm getting bored or don't want to think.

    I love that color :)

  5. Anything stockinette in the round (my tank haha) is always soothing, OR SOCKS!
I love that color, you always die yarn so lovely. I agree you need to have a blocking party though - that shawl would look lovely all nice and blocked. Maybe we can do a "Skype blocking date" :)

  6. I guess I consider soothing to be mindless...not something I need to concentrate on. So my fall back knitting would be scrap blankets. Whether they be stripes or squares, I make them easy enough to put away and take back out at random!

  7. Stunning! My soothing/ mindless knitting would be dishcloths.

  9. Love the colour, very nice FO. My soothing knitting is plain stockinette like socks, longies, simple raglan jumpers... Something I can just let my hands do without thinking too much

  10. That color is gorgeous with your hair color. Love it! I agree that a blocking party would make the task so much more enjoyable! Dishcloths and socks are my go to mindless soothing knits. Although I would probably need a little something stronger to relax me if I had to take finales. :-)

  11. Love it - the colour is just lovely! I've had my eye on this pattern for ages - I think I'm in need of a mindless knit at the moment ... we'll see what pops up.

  12. What a fantastic color! I can see how this would be just the thing to work on when you need a mental break, but want to keep your hands busy. I love this type of project for those times too, as well as plain, vanilla socks.

  14. This pattern has been in my shawl queue for quite some time and I love your version in that rich blue. I'm sure they'll be air-conditioning in your future this summer where that shawl will come in handy!

  16. Lovely colour. When I need to relax I start knitting something with miles of stock stitch and just knit away.

  23. comfort knitting with a fabulous result - nice job! i've stopped worrying about knitting what works for the season i'm in - it'll eventually work and i'd rather knit what i want.

for me - comfort knitting is usually a plain vanilla pair of socks. i always have one on the needles and it's great for both soothing knitting as well as bringing with me if i have to wait somewhere or even at the local pub. i love knitting at the pub :)

  25. Love the colors! To answer your question ... garter stitch! That's my go to for comfort knitting. I just finished Hitchhiker, which is the perfect brainless garter stitch project if you are ever looking for another kerchief-ish pattern to knit easily when your classes ramp up again!

  26. Great color! I find garter stitch anything to be the most soothing to knit.

  27. I love the color. I just finished making a vest in a similar hue. Hope all is well with you. I was happy to see in your last post that someone else had never taken a physics course before. I was signed up to take physics for my senior year of high school, but changed me schedule before the school year started to become an aid to my French teacher. (I guess I had a bit of senioritus.) I'm home for the summer and am terrible about getting on the computer (at work doing so is a great diversion--I hope my employers aren't reading this). Love your cat picture, too. I had a rough time with my cat at the vet this week. These creatures can be unpredictable.
