Organizing Stash!

For a while now I have been struggling to come up with a good system of organizing my unlabeled stash yarns, especially for handspun.  I do keep my Ravelry page fairly up to date, but I really wanted a simple, but fun system for tagging my handspun.

This is what I came up with:

I'm sure many of you have seen QR codes before, they are easy to generate and people often use them to link to websites from advertisements.  Basically, the image stores information kind of like a barcode, which can be scanned using a smartphone camera.

Me being the nerdy person I am, decided that this would be an awesome method of tagging my handspun!  So, if I quickly want to remind myself of the fiber content or yardage of a particular skein of handspun, all I have to do is quickly scan the code with my phone.

Some of you might be asking, why not just make cute little handwritten tags?  To which I respond, this is way more fun and I like the neatness of having everything barcoded like this.

I've just started figuring out how I want the tags to look.  If I like the system enough, I might also tag some stashed skeins for which I have lost the packaging. Also, next batch I print are going to be smaller.  I'm also planning to use these to label my boxes when I move next month!

Do you have any awesome organization tools that you love?

Also, I wanted to thank all of you who kindly sympathized with me on the subject of part of Tuesday's post. To be honest, I'm still pretty shocked.

  1. This is more than awesome - this is super awesome! I have absolutely no idea how you would do this...the mind boggles. As a nerd myself, I think it looks to be genius and if I ever get a phone like that I will knocking on your door for instructions :)
P.S. your yarn is lovely, as always X

  4. I never would have thought to do this, but then again I don't have a smart phone. Either way, this is a very creative take on organizing your information.

  6. This is just very very cool- but I'm trying to get my head around it. I understand how the codes can take you to website but I didn't know you could have it direct you to entered data. Please do share more if you can.

  12. I really think you have just created a monster out of me. What if I created an QR code for my stash and included that picture on my Rav pages? Seriously the possibilities are endless. I am in love with this idea!

  13. That is so nerdy and cool--right up my alley to be honest. I don't have the time or patience or a phone to scan them, but I really like the idea. Clever!!

  14. That's a really good idea!

My stash page on Ravelry is my main organisation tool. I generally add new yarn to my stash page as soon as I get it. It helps me see what I've got and I like being able to link my stash to patterns in my queue.

As for the physical organisation of my stash... well, it's a mess and I really need to think about the best way to redo my stash storage so it's not so scary!

  15. This is super cool, but I have to put in another vote for a tutorial. I use QR codes and know the basic concept, but I don't how how you input the data and create the code. There could be a new way to organize my stash, that's pretty neat!
